Jordan-Palestine Border Crossing: Part Two

Over two and half years have passed since I wrote the article about crossing the border from Palestine to Jordan; I am happy to report nothing has changed, and the tips still as terrible as ever.
It is time to go over the return trip from Jordan to Palestine.

The trip typically starts from a town on the Palestinian - Jordanian border.  The town's name is "Al-Shuneh Al-Shamalieh" or North Shuneh.  There, you enter the border control structure where a Jordanian police officer performs the first documents check.  The car pulls into the border control structure heading toward Departures.  On arrival to the departures section, a second police officer checks your documents and hands you a departures slip.  You walk past the police officer and you then leave your luggage in the custody of the Jordanian border police.  You walk in a narrow passage where you buy a bus ticket, and then you proceed to the terminal.  A Jordanian Police office hands you a number and monitors you as you pass through a metal detector.

As you enter the passengers’ hall, you find an area where passenger stand and fill their departure slip handed earlier by the police officer.  You then commence towards the hall and wait for your number.  As your number is called, you proceed towards a civilian clothed officer; you hand him your documents “Passport, Border Document, and departures slip”.  He enters your data into a computer system and stamps your departure slip and passes your documents through a small window to a uniform police officer who enters your information into a second computer system.  Now, you have your documents and you commence towards another hall to wait for your turn to get onto the bus; the destination is the Palestinian territories.  After waiting in the hall, you collect your luggage, store it in the bus’s luggage area and climb into the bus.

A Jordanian police officer checks every passenger and collects the upper half of the departure slip.  A metal gate opens and we head towards Palestine.  The bus drives through three sets of checkpoints before it stops around a hundred meters from the River Jordan where another Jordanian Police officer hops into the bus where he collects the second half of the departure slip.

The bus drives towards the border and hits the first Israeli Check point.  There the bus waits until the Israeli occupation crew is located for the first security check.  The bus moves few meters ahead and parks; all the passengers are requested to disembark and with their passports in-hand towards a little shack where an Israeli soldiers checks their documents.  After the bus is empty, an Israeli occupation soldier climbs the bus and performs a security sweep.  There after, the bus moved through another checkpoint towards the third checkpoint where the bus parks to the side of the road and waits for a the Israeli checkpoint personnel to waive the bus through.

After the bus is let through, it heads towards the main terminal where the passengers are asked to remain seated for around 10 minutes.  A civilian armed with an American made M16 waives the bus driver and the bus is emptied.  Every passenger heads toward her luggage, stacks them on a trolley and heads towards the luggage check-in-counter.  The luggage is handed to border personnel alongside your passport.  The passport is returned to you after a sticker is placed on your passport.

You head into the terminal where you face a metal detector.  You then proceed towards the main hall where you stand in queue.  An Israeli border police officer enters your information into a computer system and you move into the luggage hall.  There you pass through 2 sets of checkpoints, one for the luggage security department and the second for the border police.  There after, you collect your luggage, pass through customs and head to a yard outside the Terminal.

At the yard, you buy a bus ticket, and hop into the bus and head towards Jericho.  On the way to Jericho, you clear 3 sets of Israeli checkpoints and you reach the Palestinian border police building.  A Palestinian police officer climbs up the bus, collects passports and disappears with them for 15 minutes.  He then comes back, returns any documents he has collected and the bus heads deep into Jericho.

Minutes later, the bus arrives into the Jericho Municipality Bus Terminal  where you exit the bus and the Journey Ends
